Home Tip Tuesday: Drip Irrigation vs. Sprinkler Irrigation

Image
Water shortages have become a way of life in many regions, and the desire to use fewer resources is on almost everyone’s mind, even if the need to conserve is not desperate. Hand watering is the simplest and most conservative way to deliver water to your landscape, but it’s not a realistic method for taking care of an entire yard or garden. Installing a water managment system may be the best way to save water and keep your landscape healthy at the same time. Drip and sprinkle irrigation systems are both good options for residential and commercial irrigation. Both methods are affordable to install, provide water savings and do the job well. Which method is best for your situation may depend on the size and shape of the landscape, the types of plants and the environment in which you live.

Home Tip Tuesday: Creating a Fairy Garden

Image
Fairy gardens enchant children of all ages, including adults who still enjoy a sense of whimsy. It seems every garden center and craft store has a section devoted to tiny model homes, thumb-nail sized garden stones and other Lilliputian accessories. With all the items available, creating a fairy garden can be similar to putting together a Christmas Village. If your yard space is limited or if what you want is a sweet little indoor show piece to delight the kids, a few store-bought accessories arranged inside a container really is all you need. But if your idea of creating a garden includes getting dirt under your fingernails, the possibilities for fairy magic are endless.

Formal Garden Designs

Image
Formal gardens have a clear and defined structure.  They are designed in geometric shapes like squares, triangles and straight lines and they are symmetrical.  The plants used are usually more leafy greens than flowers - think boxwood hedges.  Formal gardens also tend to have a focal point like a fountain or birdbath.  As the saying goes, 'A picture speaks a thousand words,' and we've found some beauties.  Enjoy!

Home Tip Tuesday: Five Garden Tips for Helping Bird & Insect Pollinators

Image
Pollinators help plants flower and fruit. Without them, we would have less foods to eat and a drab environment.  Many creatures -- from ants to wasps -- accidentally spread pollen, which fertilizes plants.  But the main pollinators in North America are honey bees, wild bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Their bodies accumulate and shed pollen as they travel from flower to flower searching for nectar.

So, how can we support these tiny workers and other insects that help make our world fruitful? Here are five tips for helping bird and insect pollinators.
