Free-standing tubs and the color gray are big this year. |
Very little makes a worse impression in a home than an outdated bathroom. Though style is important, it's not the only consideration. Bathrooms need to be both hygienic and comfortable to function well. The design trends for 2015 improve function by making bathrooms more environmentally friendly and easier to clean, without sacrificing the comforts we've grown used to.
In: Minimalist Modern
Minimalism is the hottest design trend for 2015. Expect to see bathrooms with clean lines, open or floating vanities and sleek metal details. A move away from rustic or spa-like design doesn't mean bathrooms won't offer comfort, but function with a touch of glamour will be emphasized over the cozy design trends of the past.
Out: Bowl Sinks
Bathroom sinks became show-stopping works of art in recent years. Art glass and chiseled stone bowls resting on top of the bathroom vanity instead of inside it were adorning the most beautiful bathrooms. However, with the move toward clean lines, artsy bowl sinks are now a thing of the past. Look for vanities with built-in sinks or drop-in sinks that create a smooth, almost seamless transition between sink and counter top.
Micro tile and under-mount sinks are trending. |
In: Freestanding Tubs
Water conservation is also trending in 2015, so the gargantuan soaking tubs we've seen in recent years are less popular, but the freestanding tub is alive and well. They're just a little smaller and sleeker than before. A move away from glass-encased shower stalls big enough for two makes way for the freestanding tub in almost any master bath.
Out: Rain Showers
Luxury will always be popular, but the trend in 2015 is to balance luxury with responsible use of resources. Rain showers and elaborate multi-head showers are losing favor while technologies that conserve water without minimizing comfort are on trend.
Gray is the hottest color for 2015. |
In: Color
When the design trend is minimalism, color becomes more important than ever. Gray is the hottest color in bathroom decor for 2015, especially when highlighted with black or dark gray tiles. Deep, warm hues of blue or gray-green shades of olive are also popular. If the idea of a gray bathroom worries you, try painting just one focal wall to incorporate this trend.
Out: Subway Tile
White subway tile has been one of the must-have design features for modern bathrooms in the last decade. But micro-tile in black or other moody colors is the new trend. Micro-tiles in solid, dramatic color create plenty of texture without compromising the integrity of minimalist design. If you love your clean, white subway tile, don't tear it out just yet. Subway tile is a classic bathroom material that will no doubt be on trend again soon.
