Home Tip Tuesday: Tips for Creating Your Perfect She Shed

Via BHG

If you’ve been stuck in a man cave for the past few years, you may not know that a “she shed” is the chic new girls-only backyard hideaway every woman is secretly longing to own. It’s a place to enjoy a cup of tea—or something stronger—with a friend, curl up with a good book or simply get away from it all.  Creating a she shed can be as involved as building a whole new unit in the backyard or as simple as erecting the family tent and putting out the “do not disturb” sign.  Whatever level of extravagance you decide on, these tips will help you make the most of your she shed:

1. Building A Dream
If you’re fortunate enough to have an empty structure on your property, you’re already half way to having an awesome she shed. An unused potting shed or detached garage are perfect for converting into a private oasis. And claiming the space for yourself may be just the motivation that’s needed to get an unused building cleaned out. But if you don’t happen to have an available outbuilding, one of these options might work:
  • A pre-fab tool shed. Tool sheds come in a variety of sizes and styles these days, some even have loft spaces for a comfy sleeping nook
  • A gazebo would make a stylish she shed for the woman with a romantic soul. Hang sheer curtains around the perimeter for instant privacy
  • A child’s playhouse provides just enough space for one grown-up to read, knit or take a nap without disruption
  • A small yurt or a teepee could make a comfortable space for the woman with a sense of adventure

2. “What’s Mom Doing Out There?"
Decide the purpose of your getaway spot before buying those vintage lace curtains. Do you want a private space to enjoy your favorite hobby, write the novel you’ve always dreamed of or just hang out with friends? Before getting too carried away with the décor, make sure you have room for the key pieces that will make your she shed function the way you want and need.

3.  Make It Pretty
Whatever pretty means to you, do that. By definition, creating a she shed is a feminine venture, but you get to decide what’s feminine. House your collection of antique tea cups or baseball cards. Paint the walls lavender or cover them in knotty pine. The whole point of the space is to create a room you love to spend time in.

4. Get Natural
Make the most of your space by truly making it an oasis. Include plenty of flowers, herbs, climbing plants and other garden favorites to decorate the outside of your shed as well as the inside.
