The best course of action is to have a strong overhead light with a dimmer switch, as well as table lamps or sconces by each side of the bed. If you really want a luxurious space, get yourself some blackout curtains so you won't have to worry about losing sleep from the sun or your neighbor's porch light that has to stay on 24/7.
