With this gorgeous fall weather it's hard to believe that winter will be here before you know it. Now is the time to prepare your home for winter. This will prevent costly repairs during the winter months. The following tips focus on how to prepare for winter on the outside of the home:
Inspect and clean your gutters! Gutters can get clogged with leaves and debris from fall. This can result in standing water that freezes in cold temperatures and eventually forces its way up under the roof shingles and into your house.
Have a professional inspect and clean your chimney. Blockages and buildup can lead to dangerous conditions such as insufficient ventilation and fires. Yearly maintenance will ensure your unit works safely and efficiently throughout the winter.
Disconnect hoses otherwise ice can form and pressure can build up in the water lines inside your home. If this happens, a water line leak or break could occur and cause severe damage to your home.
Check your home for any air leaks before the winter chill is here. Caulk where needed, install weather stripping around doors and windows, ensure door sweeps seal properly and consider adding storm doors and windows.
