Tips on Creating a Meditation Space

Do your New Year’s resolutions include getting healthy and reducing the stress in your life?  Meditation has been shown to help improve both physical and mental health. Studies have found meditation to be effective in easing depression, reducing stress and increasing brain function. Creating a special space in your home for meditating can help you nurture this practice.

Choosing Your Space
Choose a spot that is quiet and private. Walk around your home and garden to find a spot that feels peaceful to you. Maybe it has a great view or the wall color is soothing.  Whatever it is that attracts you, trust your instinct and make that your special spot.  You don’t need an entire room - a quiet, cozy corner can do the trick.

Keep it Simple
Keep things as minimal as possible.  You don’t need a lot of accessories to meditate.  A comfortable floor pillow for sitting, a blanket, a screen to add privacy, a statue and incense or aromatherapy oils are some things to consider – just keep it simple.

Natural Accents
Bring a touch of nature into your space.  A potted plant, a bowl of stones or shells are some good options.  A table-top fountain will bring the soothing sound of water into your spot.  Remember to keep it simple! You don’t want to clutter the space or fill it with things that need a lot of attention.

Lighting
A room with natural light is ideal for a meditation space.  Enhance whatever light nature gives you with sheer window treatments that make the room feel cozy and let the light in.  If meditating at night consider using candles or a dimmer switch on the lights to have nice ambient lighting.

Sounds
Music can help bring tranquility and peace to your space.  As mentioned earlier, a fountain in the space would add a bit of nature and a soothing sound to drown out background noise. There are many apps available that can provide meditation sounds and music, if you prefer.

Ultimately, this is your special space.  Choose what will work best for you.
