Springtime Home Maintenance

Each season comes with its set of home maintenance chores.  There is something special about spring that is really motivating to clean up and get things done.  Take advantage of it and get to work!  Here are some recommended home maintenance tasks to help get you started:

Roof Check
Winter storms can be rough on your roof and shingles. Check for storm damage and repair and replace shingles. Small leaks can lead to major water damage when those inevitable spring showers come pouring down. Check the gutters too. Clogged gutters can be just as damaging as a leaky roof. Remove any debris that’s collected over the winter.

HVAC Check
Check your air conditioner unit to make sure there has been no damage over the winter. Clean and replace the HVAC filters to keep your system running smoothly. You’ll use less energy and save money in the long run. While you’re at it, take time to clean the dryer vent too. Lint traps catch a lot, but not all of the lint your laundry produces. A plugged dryer vent makes the dryer work harder and it’s a fire hazard. If you have a basement or crawl space, clear rocks and other debris away from foundation vents.

Screen Check
Spring is the best time to open those windows for some fresh air after a long winter.  Screens should be cleaned and inspected.  Remove your screens and wash them gently with plain soapy water. Check for and repair small holes, too. It doesn’t take a very big opening for those unwanted pests to find their way in.

Pressure Wash
A pressure washer is an important tool for your outdoor cleaning.  If you don’t own one, you may be able to rent one from your local home improvement store.  Spring clean the deck, fence, driveway and even the house to keep the outside of your home as fresh and neat as the inside. This is also the perfect time to inspect outdoor surfaces for damage.

Miscellaneous
Spring home maintenance can include a large array of small chores. Creating a checklist may make it easier to get them all completed. Here are some suggestions:

  • Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Vacuum refrigerator coils
  • Check the hose on the washing machine for damage or cracks
  • Check seals around doors and windows
  • Trim back tree branches that are closer than five to seven feet from your house

Knock out your spring chores so you can spend time enjoying the sunshine and mild temperatures.
